How The Olfactory System Works with your bodily functions.
The olfactory system is uniquely powerful in the way it processes scent through both unconscious perception and conscious, rational evaluation. When odor molecules enter the nose, they bind to receptors and are transmitted directly to the olfactory bulb, where they are encoded into what can be described as an “olfactory signature.” This signal is first relayed to the Olfactory Cortex I (including the piriform cortex and amygdala), triggering unconscious perception and immediate emotional responses without cognitive awareness. These responses are deeply tied to instinct and memory. Meanwhile, Olfactory Cortex II—located in the orbitofrontal cortex—handles conscious perception, where the brain identifies, labels, and assigns value or preference to smells, linking them to experiences, choices, and desires

Crucially, olfactory signals also interact with the hypothalamus, a deep brain structure responsible for controlling the autonomic and endocrine systems. Through this connection, scent can activate powerful neurovegetative responses such as lowering heart rate, relaxing muscles, and modulating blood pressure and respiratory functions (including the bronchial tubes). The hypothalamus is also involved in regulating digestion and sleep. These mechanisms explain how certain scents can calm the nervous system, improve focus, reduce stress, and support physical and emotional well-being—underscoring the transformative health benefits of olfactory stimulation.
