Yes. In a recent Phase 2b trial, one dose of the inhaled psychedelic GH001 helped more than half of patients.
The Olfactory system is proving over and over that it is the most powerful sense that we have.

Patients resistant to depression treatments reach remission within a week—while placebo helped none. The treatment group saw a 15.2-point drop on the MADRS depression scale, representing a very large effect.
What is Treatment-Resistant Depression?
This is depression that doesn’t respond to standard antidepressants, even after multiple attempts. It affects millions and often feels hopeless. A fast-acting, single-dose option could be transformative.
What is GH001?
GH001 is an inhaled, short-acting form of 5-MeO-DMT (also known as mebufotenin). Patients inhale it once during a supervised clinic session. Because it acts and clears quickly, the psychedelic experience is brief—unlike daily pills that can take weeks to show results.
Striking Results
The double-blind, randomized trial included 81 adults with treatment-resistant depression. By day 8:
- GH001 group: 15.2-point improvement on MADRS
- Placebo group: essentially no change
The effect size (Cohen’s d ≈ -2.0) is exceptionally large. Most importantly, 57.5% of GH001 patients reached remission compared to 0% on placebo. The number needed to treat was just 2—meaning for every two people treated, one additional person achieved remission.
Dr. Kumar’s Take
“This is genuinely exciting,” says Dr. Kumar. “A single inhaled dose pushing more than half of hard-to-treat patients into remission in a week is rare in psychiatry. The effect size and number needed to treat are remarkable.”
Caveats remain: This is a Phase 2b trial with 81 participants and short follow-up. We don’t yet know how long benefits last or how it performs in larger, more diverse groups. Psychedelic treatments require careful medical supervision.

Safety and Limitations
Side effects were mostly mild to moderate and short-lived, with no serious adverse events reported. However, longer-term data and larger trials are needed to confirm durability and broader safety.
Practical Takeaways
- Do not attempt to source or use 5-MeO-DMT on your own. These results are from controlled clinical settings.
- If standard treatments have failed, talk to your psychiatrist about psychedelic clinical trials you may qualify for.
- View this as promising early evidence, not a guaranteed cure.
Bottom Line
A single inhaled dose of GH001 delivered rapid, powerful antidepressant effects in patients with treatment-resistant depression, with strong remission rates and a good early safety profile. While highly promising, larger and longer studies are required before it becomes a standard option.
